Muscular strength and balance regulation in Prader-Willi syndrome

This study evaluates which factors contribute to muscle force, balance and walking characteristics in adults with and without Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS).

PURPOSE

The aim of this study is to determine whether adults with PWS who present no cognitive impairment demonstrate: 1) a different muscle structure than adults without the syndrome; 2) deficits in voluntary and involuntary activation of skeletal muscle compared to adults without the syndrome; 3) altered muscular activation during gait and 4) impaired vestibular input for sustaining standing balance.

PARTICIPANTS

  • 10 participants diagnosed with PWS who may or not present cognitive impairment
  • 10 participants classified as obese
  • Male and female participants between the ages of 18 and 35 years will be recruited

DESCRIPTION

The study will require one short visit (3-4 hours) to California State University Fullerton. During the visit participants will have their height, weight, and body composition measured and will complete movement-related tests including force, balance, and walking.Participants will also have an ultrasound of the muscles in their legs. Participants will receive a copy of the body composition scan, a 3D analysis of their specific walking pattern, information regarding their balance, maximal force testing, $50 cash at the end of the visit, and will be reimbursed for mileage for the visits to CSUF up to 200 miles roundtrip.
