Resistance Training for People with Down Syndrome

PURPOSE

The aim of this project to find out if a resistance training program  delivered using tailored videos of exercise routines adapted for people with Down syndrome helps participants with Down syndrome get stronger and increases their capacity to do physical tasks common in everyday life.

PARTICIPANTS

  • 50 adults with Down Syndrome, ages 15-45 years

DESCRIPTION

This program brings exercise to the participant’s home. This exercise program was designed for and with people with Down syndrome. The program is provided to participants through a secure website. After signing into the website, the participant will find exercise videos to follow three days a week for a total of ten weeks. Each video demonstrates a follow along exercise routine (45-60 minutes) shown by people with and without Down syndrome.

Participation in the study requires completing three forms online: a consent to participate form and two online questionnaires. Then participation requires two online meetings (about 1 hour each): one at the beginning and one at the end of the program. In these meetings, the participant will be guided to do four physical tests like lifting bags, standing from a chair, modified push-ups. After the first meeting, the participant will begin the exercise program. A parent/guardian/sibling who lives with the participant will have to commit to being their ‘buddy’ during the program. The participant’s buddy will help with answering the online questionnaires, doing some measurements (e.g. height, weight, and other tests) during the online meetings, making sure that the participant follows along the exercises in the videos and if they want to exercise along they can do so!

All materials needed for the program are common household items such as: a chair, 500 ml water bottles, two grocery bags, a scale, a tape measure, and a backpack. After the study, participants will be able to continue these exercises on their own and will receive a report with the results from the tests. As a thank you for participation, participants completing both online meetings will receive up to $35 in gift cards.
